NVIDIA to Abandon Max-Q and Max-P Naming Scheme – RTX Ampere Mobility Dynamic Power Targets Revealed

In all my years of being a PC hardware consumer I haven’t come across quite such an anti-consumer company as either Intel or especially NVIDIA.

GeForce RTX 30 series laptops are indeed “The Ultimate Play” and I’ll tell you why.

During CES 2021, NVIDIA announced its mobility lineup of its RTX 3000 series. Only three GPUs were revealed for mobile, that being variants of the supposed RTX “3080” which ended up being just a full fledged GA104 chip, the RTX 3070 which has just 8 SM’s less than its bigger brother and finally the RTX 3060 Mobile which actually offers more SM’s than its desktop counterpart albeit with only 6GB of VRAM.

However the reveal was left with uncertainty, that uncertainty being the power plan characteristics of both Max-Q and Max-P variants.

Worry no more as the following slide was conveniently scraped from some Chinese messaging board. Showcasing the variable power profiles of both SKUs.

There are multiple power profiles for NVIDIA’s mobility range of GeForce RTX 3000-series GPUs. Those include TGP (Total Graphics Power), cTGP (Configurable Total Graphics Power), and finally PPAB which is a sort of dynamic boosting function tailored to the cooling capabilities of the mobile device.

Judging by this slide we can see that Max-P variants can receive an additional 15 watts of power while Max-Q variants can receive 20 watts. This is mainly down to the fact that Max-Q graphics cards have a much lower TGP design at 80 watts while Max-P will start with a TGP of 115 watts.

However the most confusing part is the custom TGP range that’s featured across the entire stack, varying from as much as 60 watts on the RTX 3080 Max-Q to as little as 10 watts on the RTX 3070 Max-P. It doesn’t make much sense but could possibly mean that manufacturers could theoretically have their RTX 3080 Max-Q GPU operate with a maximum TGP of 145 watts.

Allowing such power consumption on mobility graphics chips just seems wasteful and irresponsible. But whatever it takes to have one craptop perform better over another I suppose.

And I just want to note as it seems like something many other urinalists would just gloss over like it never even existed, that being the varying memory frequencies between the Max-Q and Max-P graphics cards. Since the GPUs in NVIDIA’s mobility lineup top out at GA104 rather than the GA102 core that powers a real RTX 3080, that these graphics cards only offer standard GDDR6 memory.

Which isn’t all that bad considering that all Max-P graphics cards will receive 14 Gbps memory modules, however the Max-Q trash will receive memory that’s only 12 Gbps. Bad enough that the clockspeeds and therefore performance of these Max-Q GPUs will be laughably low but it too faces another punch of inferior memory bandwidth compared to the Max-P offerings.

However have NVIDIA since removed the notion of Max-Q and Max-P SKUs?

According to NotebookCheck that seems to be the case, with the claim that NVIDIA will no longer specify whether a specific RTX Ampere mobility GPU is either a Max-Q variant or a Max-P variant.

Instead, NVIDIA will be leaving its discretion to the OEM manufacturers, because NVIDIA has always done shit like this where they just have to pin the blame on somebody else after they were conned into buying Max-Q hardware with performance all over the damn table across most laptops.

It would appear that even on NVIDIA’s website for RTX 30 series laptops, that the specified models for the GPUs are merely dubbed “Laptop GPU”

Which isn’t all that shocking considering for laptops built with previous generation Turing graphics cards, the actual listings only specified just the given SKU with varying frequencies and TGP values just like they’re doing now.

One thing I’d like to gloss over that I didn’t mention in a previous article is how the RTX 3080 mobility GPU will come in a 8GB variant. With both GPUs being based on the same GA104 core with 8 SM’s being the difference between them, what fucking purpose would the RTX 3080 “Laptop” have to exist if it also comes wrapped in an 8GB bow?

If NVIDIA were to simply cull the Max-Q and Max-P SKUs that would simply spark outrage and confuse the goyim to no end.

Differentiating Max-Q from Max-P is essentially vital. This sort of transparency allows consumers to know which laptops prioritise performance and which laptops are best kept to playing games of an RPG Maker verity.

If NVIDIA were to scrap all that entirely that’d be a downright fucking dirty tactic. And just another reason why (((premium))) gaming laptops are for retarded scoundrels.

Upon further investigation regarding if NVIDIA have since scrapped Max-Q and Max-P individual SKUs, checking the upcoming products of mobile manufacturers shows that in their listings have since removed the mention of either Max-P or Q from their RTX 30 series naming. With all GPU’s being listed as either the bare GPU or listed as a Laptop GPU.

The ASUS ROG STRIX G17 merely has its graphics listed as a bare GeForce RTX 3070. Which at a glance would certainly confuse customers as they do not know exactly which variant they’re getting.

It’s also worthy to note that this laptop specifically comes with “ROG Boost” which I believe is to take advantage of the PPAB range as shown above.

While the MSI GE66 Raider’s come advertised as featuring the RTX 3080 “Laptop GPU” in 8GB and 16GB flavors, as well as the RTX 3070 “Laptop GPU”.

With varying types of screens to maximise your peasantry experience, whether or not you’re buying a Max-Q or a Max-P product is certainly not listed. But at least it comes with a “supreme” Intel 10th Generation mobility processor, unlike the ASUS ROG STRIX G17 which will come with one of AMD’s latest Ryzen 5000 mobile CPU’s… utterly dominating Intel processors in every aspect.

One might even question if these OEM manufacturers are receiving kickbacks by avoiding utilising AMD processors.

 

And finally we have the Gigabyte AORUS 15G YC and XC which also come with one of Intel’s garbage mobility processors with a fantastic LCDepressing 1080P display.

Once more it seems as if NVIDIA have entirely scrapped their Max-Q and Max-P branding as these laptops come listed with your choice of a GeForce RTX 3080 “Laptop GPU” in a 8GB flavor or a RTX 3070 “Laptop GPU”.

NVIDIA once again simply cannot refrain from committing atrocities such as this which directly impact their own consumers, and yet time after time again nobody seems to fucking care. With every generation shit like this gets worse, as the corporate greed of NVIDIA slowly consumes us whole.

We’re then adapted to this level of kike fuckary, just in time for Jensen to strip something else away entirely.

NVIDIA is boiling the frog and it’s already too late to escape.
